Day Tripping: Tacoma’s Point Defiance Park

Travel with a brand-new baby, unless absolutely necessary, isn’t something we planned to do right away.  We planned to take it easy, one day at a time, and gauge the new addition’s temperament and needs.  We thought we might venture out, but nothing got written down on the calendar, if you know what I mean.

The thing is though, we’re still those same people who love to explore and stay active even when a tiny bundle is around.  Once the family visits had died down, and we had a free weekend, we thought we might as well try out a day trip.

Tacoma isn’t too far, under an hour’s drive from our home in Seattle, and we had on our bucket list to visit the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium.  We’re members of our own Woodland Park Zoo, but we were curious as to what was happening “down south” and knew it was an outing the whole family could handle.

From cute little furry friends to large beastly creatures and everything in between we were able to see it all in just a couple of hours.  At the same time, we could have stayed even longer, but our little crew’s patience was expiring.  We also appreciated that it seemed there were just as many indoor or covered exhibits as there were outdoor.  When we got cold or needed a break from the drizzle, there were plenty of options.

What are the zoos like in your region? Tell us about your favorite exhibit.

  1. Glad you guys made it down! Not as big as the woodland park zoo but big enough to wear out little ones! Rainy days are great for the aquarium and if you go at the right time can have the place to yourself. Hopefully the tiger cubs were out. They are adorable!

    • Yes! We kind of liked that we felt like we had “seen it all”–much easier to wrap our heads around than some of the larger zoos. We did get to see the tiger cubs–I agree, so adorable–wrestling around so much that all my photos of them were blurry 🙂

We'd love to hear from you!
