Just for the fun of it, to make New Year’s eve a little bit more eventful and exciting for a couple of exhausted parents of a newborn, we took a ferry boat ride.
Bergen (3 years old) stayed home with his grandfather for “guys pizza night” and the three of us–Slaed, Georgia and I–rode from downtown Seattle across the sound to Bainbridge Island. When we reached the island, we exited the ferry (we were walk-on passengers), did a quick “about-face” and traveled back to the city along with a crowd geared up to really celebrate and ring in the new year.
There were no fancy parties or special events waiting for us when we returned to the city, just a celebratory sushi dinner (after 9-months of abstaining) at our favorite neighborhood spot, and a night of unpredictable, sporadic sleep. But for a us, in our parents-of-a-newborn haze, this mini-adventure was special, and something I think we’ll always remember. After all it was Georgia’s first ferry boat ride, and a chance for the two of us to enjoy her without the worry of wrangling her big brother.
If we’re honest though aside from toting a car seat with an 8 pound little lady inside around the ferry terminal and the nursing session that happened on the return trip, it felt like it was just the two of us grown-ups…Enjoying our city on a chilly, but beautifully clear evening.
Is your 2015 off to a good start? How did you celebrate? Any changes for you and your family this year?
